In the beginning was the word, in the beginning is imagination.

 

 

The exhibition (0/1) o zero e o um, is presented in several spaces of the National Museum of Natural History and Science: Atrium, Amphitheatre of Laboratory of Chemical, the Cloister, Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry and in the Corridor of Geology. The theme of the exhibition is based on the book, Atlas do corpo e da imaginação. Theory, fragments and images by Gonçalo M. Tavares. “Let's say that, no matter how many possibilities the imagination may have, its last move is to reduce the infinite possibilities to two and, between these two, finally choose one. Only in this way can the imagination pass to the outside, because outside there are no double times. We can do one thing and then its opposite, but we cannot do one thing and its opposite at the same time.” [1] Here the artists will inhabit the space with their works, works that contribute to making a path like an unfinished journey. “Marking a certain line at a certain instant does not allow for the accurate prediction of the next step.”[2]

 

Artists with different routes and education, some works that intersect, others that complete each other and still others that follow parallel paths, but all follow the concept of materialization, embodiment. “An inhabited house is no longer a space and becomes what surrounds a body.”[3] Artistic works that occupy and are inscribed in this museological space and inexorably only materialize when the idea, the concept materializes.

 

Quoting gallery owner Mercedes Cerón, promoter of the exhibition, “(0/1) o zero e o um, reflects on imagination and oppositional concepts, the arbitrariness of interpretation and on which imagination focuses through the representation of reality or objects and not the thing itself. The variety of statements, reproducing metaphors multiplying the possibilities of truth – a kind of momentary science.”

 

The visual and aesthetic description does not end as long as its idealization and imagination fail to materialize. “Neither matter, nor space, nor time are for twenty years what they were until then. It is to be expected that such great innovations would change the whole technique of the arts, thus acting on the invention itself, perhaps even changing the very notion of art in magical terms..”[4]. In the beginning was the word, in the beginning is imagination.
