Stone Memory: Castles of Sand brings together a series of sculptures that takes the investigation of the complex ontological tensions between matter, memory, and temporality as its conceptual premise. In doing so, the artist summons contemporary artistic practice as a territory of permanent friction between the rawness of the permanent and the fragility of the ephemeral.

 

Articulated from a formal practice deeply shaped by proximity, observation and an memorable experience of the sea, Quiñones’s works drive of the precise capacity of sculpture deconstruction to transform phenomenological experience into material permanence. At the core of this entire artistic proposal lies the re-actualisation and conceptual subversion of the Florentine Renaissance technique of pietra dura. Through millimetric inlay, surgical cutting, and the chromatic intercession of different types of marble, travertine, and semi-precious minerals, the artist dissolves the traditional perception of tectonic rigidity associated with the medium. An acute visual and tactile paradox is thus established: the physical and centuries-old density of stone begins to mimic the unstable, fluid, erodible, and fragmentary nature of human memory.

 

The sculpted objects, divested of their utilitarian condition or their original use-value, undergo a process of poetic transfiguration, functioning as authentic indexers and containers of time. This sensory and conceptual immersion is deliberately amplified by a minimalist exhibition display, summoning the seaside landscape not as a geographical or picturesque place, but rather as an atmospheric and existential condition of the visitor's perceptive experience.

 

The main of the exhibition expands into a central installation projected specifically for the gallery space. Here, the sculptural works presented set down on sand address concepts of hardness and the superimposition of time layers. They work as a reproduction of objects, through the contrast between the nobility of the stone and the ephemerality of what they evoke, open a gap of reflection on life as memory and emotional archaeology. In the exhibition space, the work remains static and silent; however, it is precisely from this immobility and mineral restraint that everything else happens.

 

The sculptures operate as an apparent universal key that, before the gaze of each spectator, transforms and recreates itself. By cancelling the severity of meaning, Quiñones invites an attentive and participatory experience: each visitor brings their own biography, emotional language, and the unique set of references that defines what they recognise, remember, or imagine. Between sedimentation and erosion, between the promise of permanence and the predictability of impermanence, Stone Memory: Castles of Sand proposes a poetic reflection on sculpture as a permanent place for the inscription of time.
