Chasing butterflies is like running after dreams. They spark a childlike curiosity, always moving just a little too quickly to catch. They symbolize freedom and joy, but at the same time they carry the fleeting moment of letting go. The butterfly is free.

 

Black holes might seem like the opposite. Dark, scary, destructive and huge. Yet they hold their own kind of beauty. They draw attention as they move mysteriously through space, pulling vast amounts of matter and light into themselves. They are like dark souls, consuming everything around them. But within them lies a beauty. An infinite emptiness that seems free from thought, strong, and perfectly ordered. They make their own rules.

 

In my work, I make my own rules too. Chasing new ground by exploring the unknown. The collages are a universe of their own. They mark a new beginning for me, the start of a new chapter.

 

After renovating a huge building in the countryside north of Berlin and moving studios, I had to overcome a long break from making art. This series is my first step back into practice. I needed something playful. Something that embraces my entire past and explores the hidden corners of my inner world.

 

At the same time I had to practically adjust to a new space that is 4 times bigger than my old studio. To develop a sense for it, I chose the simple way of making many small pieces that allow me to work my way through the big room by still having the security of one small work at a time. I assembled a swarm of different images that to me feel like characters. Or like songs of a huge album that express many different emotions, topics and identities.

 

The process allows me to dive deep into self learning. Honesty and truthfulness with oneself are essential to overcome false ideals. Being able to destroy what you believed was true makes you stronger, when you realize it was always the thing that held you back in the first place.

 

This exhibition is my personal journey of growth. May it be a mirror for yours.
